Parathyroid hormone

Medical Information about Parathyroid hormone

Abstract:

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone your parathyroid glands release to control calcium levels in your blood. It also controls phosphorus and vitamin D levels. If your body has too much or too little parathyroid hormone, it can cause symptoms related to abnormal blood calcium levels.

Functions of Parathyroid Hormone:

• Bones: Parathyroid hormone stimulates the release of small amounts of calcium from your bones into your bloodstream.

• Kidneys: Parathyroid hormone enables the production of active vitamin D (calcitriol) in your kidneys. PTH also signals your kidneys to retain calcium in your body rather than flushing it out through your urine.

• Small intestine: Parathyroid hormone signals your small intestine to absorb more calcium from the food you eat.

Symptoms of high parathyroid hormone levels:

• Joint pain and bone pain.

• More frequent urination and thirst.

• Muscle aches, weakness, cramping and twitches

• Fatigue.

• Depression

• Decrease in appetite.

• Nausea and vomiting.

• Constipation.

• If you experience these symptoms of hypercalcemia.

• It is important to contact your healthcare provider.

Symptoms of low parathyroid hormone levels:

o Tingling in your lips, fingers or feet.

o Muscle cramps.

o Dry skin and brittle fingernails.

o Brain fog or confusion.

o Seizures.

o Irregular heart rhythm

When should check with Doctor?

Parathyroid hormone is an important hormone that’s in charge of managing your blood calcium levels. If experiencing symptoms of hypercalcemia or hypocalcemia, such as issues with your muscles and cognitive function, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider. They can run some simple tests to see if your parathyroid hormone levels are the culprit.

Descriptions:

Parathyroid hormone injection is used together with calcium and vitamin D to control hypocalcemia (low calcium levels) in patients with hyperparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism is a condition that is caused when the parathyroid gland in the neck doesn_t make enough parathyroid hormone (PTH). This medicine is only available through a restricted access program. Doctors who are enrolled in the restricted program can write a prescription for this medicine.

Before Using:

In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For this medicine, the following should be considered:

Allergies:

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatric:

Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of parathyroid hormone injection in the pediatric population. Safety and efficacy have not been established.

Geriatric:

Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of parathyroid hormone injection in the elderly. However, elderly patients are more likely to have kidney problems, which may require caution and an adjustment in the dose for patients receiving this medicine.

Breastfeeding:

There are no adequate studies in women for determining infant risk when using this medication during breastfeeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions:

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are taking this medicine, it is especially important that your healthcare professional know if you are taking any of the medicines listed below. The following interactions have been selected on the basis of their potential significance and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines.

• Alendronate

Other Interactions:

Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.

Other Medical Problems:

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

• Bone disease (eg, osteosarcoma, Paget_s disease of bone)—Use with caution. May make this condition worse.

• Kidney disease—Use with caution. The effects may be increased because of slower removal of the medicine to the body.

Prevention is better than cure

Prevention is better than cure. Preventing a disease before it starts can save lives, reduce suffering, and prevent large expenses in healthcare costs.

The best way to prevent a disease is to be proactive in leading a healthy lifestyle. This means eating a nutritious, balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, staying up-to-date with vaccines and other preventative health care measures, and avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking, drug use, and excessive drinking. Vaccines are an important part of disease prevention, as they can protect people against serious diseases, such as measles, mumps, and rubella. Other preventative measures, such as using mosquito nets and cooking food thoroughly, can help protect people from diseases like malaria and food poisoning.

Making lifestyle changes is another effective way to prevent disease. By leading a healthy lifestyle, people can reduce their risks of getting heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Furthermore, avoiding unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and excessive drinking can reduce a person’s risk of developing diseases such as COPD, respiratory illnesses, liver disease, and certain types of cancer.

Preventing diseases is not only beneficial for individual health but also for the overall health of a community. Improved preventative measures, such as clean water, sanitation, and adequate housing, are important to reduce the spread of infectious diseases in developing countries.

In conclusion, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting vaccines, practicing preventative measures, and making lifestyle changes are all effective ways to prevent disease. Doing so can improve individual health and reduce suffering within communities.

Some examples of prevention include:

  • Vaccinating against common illnesses like measles or chicken pox.
  • Getting vaccinated for diseases that you may be at risk for developing later in life (such as hepatitis B).

Preventive measures also help protect others from getting sick by preventing the spread of germs through coughing or sneezing on them. It’s important to stay healthy yourself so that you can help keep your family safe!
